Disposal

To help with the odor and deposits that are common with disposals you should regularly "clean" it.  Grinding eggshells and ice help to cleanse it.  Citrus peels also help to keep the disposal smelling fresh.

Disposals are made for biodegradable food waste.  However you should never grind shellfish shells or should you ever grind cornhusks.  Many calls for problem disposals are due to these products and non-food matter such as foil and plastic. 

When using a garbage disposal use cold water to flush waste down the drain.  Fat and grease congeal in cold water and will flush through the system easily.  However, using hot water will losen up the grease and result in the coating and clogging of the pipes.
