Refrigerator Tips

Check the seals on you refrigerator.  Place a small piece of paper between the seal and the frame.  If you can pull it out easily than the seal may need replacing.

Even if you have an automatically defrosting freezer you should manually defrost them at least once a year.

Cover liquids and foods that you place in the fridge or freezer.  If left uncovered they will release moisture into the compartment making the compressor work harder.

Vacuum the condenser coils behind the fridge at least once a year.  Doing so will allow for your refrigerator to run for shorter periods.

A full freezer performs more efficiently than an empty one.

Make sure that your freezer is located out of direct sunlight and/or away from a heat source.

People commonly place their "spare" refrigerators and freezers in a garage or basement.  However these appliances should not be set in an area that frequently goes below 45°.

Everyone likes their milk to be ice cold.  However, to conserve energy keep your fridge between 37° and 40° and the freezer portion at 5°.  To check the temperature inside your fridge put a thermometer in a glass of water and place it inside on the shelf for 24 hours.  To check freezer temp place the thermometer in the middle of freezer space between foods.  If you have a seperate case freezer it should be set to 0°.
