Common Questions on Salt Water Systems

Will salt systems make water saltier?

A salt system or a water softener will add some sodium to the finished product. However, the amount of sodium added to, say, a glass of water really is less than what would be in a slice of bread. So, any appreciable addition of sodium to your water, no.

If there’s a health concern, if there are reasons why you need to have low sodium intake in your diet a salt system can still be used to condition your water, but we can use a potassium based salt, potassium chloride rather than sodium chloride to minimize that sodium.

Can I soften my water without using salt?

Technically, no. The only way to soften water or to remove the dissolved minerals in the water, which are calcium and magnesium, is with an ion exchange, either sodium or potassium ion exchange system, which is salt. There are some products on the market that claim to be salt-free water conditioners or salt-free water softeners, but they’re really not. What they do is they electronically prevent the minerals from adhering to surfaces, so it’s more of a scale inhibitor. It will stop it from building up on items, but it will not soften or remove those minerals from the water.
